May 2026 Update:
For more than 20 years, SmackFootball has been built around one thing above all else — the players, rivalries, traditions, and weekly excitement that make this game special. As we prepare for the 2026 season and beyond, we’re excited to begin rolling out the biggest behind-the-scenes upgrades in SmackFootball history. These updates are designed to modernize the site, improve weekly content, simplify season management, and create new features for players and fans — all while keeping the core SmackFootball experience exactly the same.
The heart of SmackFootball is not changing. Weekly picks, hidden selections before lock time, rivalry battles, bowl season chaos, preseason predictions, Hail Mary picks, rankings, and the competitive spirit that has defined this game for decades will all remain intact. The goal is not to reinvent SmackFootball — it’s to strengthen it, modernize it, and prepare it for the future while protecting the traditions that longtime players love.
Over the coming months and seasons, players can expect improvements including enhanced mobile support, smarter weekly updates, AI-powered game previews and upset alerts, better historical tracking, expanded statistics, easier league management, and new community features that celebrate the personalities and history of the game.
SmackFootball began as a passion project among friends. Twenty years later, it has become a tradition. The next chapter is about building a stronger platform around the same game we’ve all come to love every football season.
Well, this is the plan anyway… :)
SmackFootball Week 1 Preview
Week 1 Shockers, Showdowns, and Playoff Pathways: The Ultimate 2026 College Football Kickoff
Alright, college football fanatics—after what felt like an eternity, Week 1 of the 2026 season is finally here, and the slate is loaded with must-watch matchups that could shake the playoff picture before September even gets going. This isn’t just any kickoff week—it’s jam-packed with rivalry fire, potential upsets, and playoff implications from coast to coast. Let’s break down where you NEED to be watching and who you should have circled on your SmackFootball radar.
North Carolina vs. TCU — The Duel for Quarterback Supremacy
This top-10 clash is the marquee game of the weekend and could be a playoff preview. North Carolina comes in favored by 6.5 points, but TCU’s physical defense and relentless ground game make this anything but a layup. SmackFootball players, keep your eyes glued to this one—quarterback duels are going to decide who takes control of the ACC and Big 12 crossover bragging rights early. Expect big-time hits and highlight-reel plays. Upset potential? Absolutely.
North Carolina State vs. Virginia — Tight ACC Battle Brewing
Under-the-radar but no less important, this battle between ranked ACC foes has a spread that screams “watch me.” NC State hosts Virginia with a slim 3.5-point advantage, and this could easily come down to who controls the trenches and turnovers. For SmackFootball fantasy enthusiasts, keep tabs on who emerges with the momentum because this game could set the tone for both teams’ playoff ambitions.
New Mexico State vs. Florida State — Monster Favorite Alert!
Florida State is a towering 20-point favorite here, but let’s not sleep on New Mexico State. Every year, these “cupcake” games hold sneaky upset vibes, and Florida State will be desperate to avoid looking vulnerable out of the gate. SmackFootball sleepers might want to watch this for emerging players who could be fantasy gems all season long—plus, a close game here would send shockwaves through Seminoles nation.
Clemson vs. LSU — The Tigers Clash
Clemson, favored by double digits, heads to face a revamped LSU squad with a chip on their shoulder. This is a classic SEC-ACC rivalry that always delivers physicality and drama. LSU’s defense could give Clemson’s offense fits, making this a potentially closer game than the 10.5-point spread suggests. SmackFootball strategists should mark this game for high-impact defensive plays and momentum shifts.
Boise State vs. Oregon — The Spread is INSANE
Oregon is a massive 30-point favorite, but Boise State has never backed down from being the ultimate underdog with a blue turf advantage. Will Oregon steamroll or will Boise State make a statement and pull the biggest upset of the weekend? SmackFootball players looking for a high-risk, high-reward playmaker should zero in here—this one’s a wild card with huge ramifications for the Pac-12 and beyond.
Liberty vs. James Madison — The Mid-Major Mayhem
James Madison is favored by nearly two touchdowns, and this game could be a showcase for mid-major powerhouses trying to prove they belong on the national stage. Liberty’s offense has weapons that could exploit weaknesses, but it’s going to take a nearly perfect game to topple JMU. Watch for breakout stars who could become fantasy darlings down the road.
Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame — Battle of the Titans
Notre Dame is laying 16.5 points, and while that’s a hefty number, this game has all the makings of a brutal slugfest. Wisconsin’s power running and stout defense will challenge the Irish’s speed and skill. For playoff implications, this game could tip the scales in the shape of the Big Ten and independent powerhouse narratives. SmackFootball players—this is a must-watch for high-impact, hard-hitting football.
Bottom Line: Week 1 is a rollercoaster of high stakes and hard hits. Whether you’re chasing fantasy points, scouting playoff contenders, or just here for the blood-pumping action, make sure you’re tuned in and ready to roll with SmackFootball’s picks and plays. This weekend could define the 2026 season before it even gets started.
Buckle up, football fans. The 2026 season is officially on.

Here are some rule changes for SmackFootball 2025!
Addition of SUPER SMACK – Smack level 6 for 30+point win.
People who stop playing for 2 weeks turn purple and do not count towards the HailMary bottom 25% until they return.
Here are some rule changes for SmackFootball 2026!
When making your Pre-Season playoff picks, you will pick 2 of those teams that you think will go to the National Championship. If they make it to the National Championship game, you will get extra points per team.
Also, if you are the only person to pick a team to go to the playoffs, you will get two points instead of one for each level that team advances.
What IS SmackFootball?
SmackFootball is a free College Football 7 game weekly pick’em.
Points are based on your knowledge of college football and a ton of blind luck. Points are also awarded depending on the level of SMACK you put on a game. Smack is like a spread. Sort of. Anyway…..do you feel lucky?
SmackFootball is NOT Fantasy Football.
GOOD GRIEF! We are too lazy and are not interested in spending that much time on ANYTHING. If you want to research and get all strategy, fine. If you want to just log in and make 7 quick picks, fine too. You’ll probably do just as well as the strategists.
SmackFootball is and always will be free to play.
1st place gets a nice engraved crystal football trophy.
The trash talk is PG and good-natured, unless you’re a fan of Tennessee or Miami. You understand, I am sure.
Currently, SmackFootball is only open to people we know and friends of friends.
Register and let me know who you are and I’ll activate your account. Registration just requires a valid email address and a name. YES, you can be Captain Jack Sparrow if you want….keep it PG, hooligan.

How do I score points?!?!
- Pick winners for 7 games selected each week.
- Smack Points – Pick spread points for each game. +- points based on levels of your predicted win or loss
- Pre-season – Playoffs Picks – Pick 4 teams (12 starting in 2024) that you think will make the college playoffs. + points for each correct team.
- Pre-season – Coaches Hot Seat – Pick a coach and if your coach gets fired, you win points
- Pre-season – Heisman – Pick a Heisman candidate. If he wins, you win points
- Lone Wolf – bonus points if you are the only person to pick a team, coach, playoff team, Heisman candidate, or Heisman winner and they win
- Hail Mary – bonus points if you are on the bottom and need to start taking some shots downfield
- “The Unicorn” – (This has its own trophy.) This is a game won where a player chooses The Smack + Lone Wolf + Hail Mary. We think this is worth something like 34 points. It has never happened. Not even close.
Winner take all, baby! Second place is the first loser. :)
Are you ready for some college football?!?!?!
No. You are NOT ready…..
