May 2026 Update:

For more than 20 years, SmackFootball has been built around one thing above all else — the players, rivalries, traditions, and weekly excitement that make this game special. As we prepare for the 2026 season and beyond, we’re excited to begin rolling out the biggest behind-the-scenes upgrades in SmackFootball history. These updates are designed to modernize the site, improve weekly content, simplify season management, and create new features for players and fans — all while keeping the core SmackFootball experience exactly the same.

The heart of SmackFootball is not changing. Weekly picks, hidden selections before lock time, rivalry battles, bowl season chaos, preseason predictions, Hail Mary picks, rankings, and the competitive spirit that has defined this game for decades will all remain intact. The goal is not to reinvent SmackFootball — it’s to strengthen it, modernize it, and prepare it for the future while protecting the traditions that longtime players love.

Over the coming months and seasons, players can expect improvements including enhanced mobile support, smarter weekly updates, AI-powered game previews and upset alerts, better historical tracking, expanded statistics, easier league management, and new community features that celebrate the personalities and history of the game.

SmackFootball began as a passion project among friends. Twenty years later, it has become a tradition. The next chapter is about building a stronger platform around the same game we’ve all come to love every football season.

Well, this is the plan anyway… :)

SmackFootball Week 1 Preview

Week 1 College Football Preview: Rivalries, Upset Alerts & Playoff Pulse

The 2026 college football season finally kicks off this week, and boy, do we have a loaded slate. From blue-blood showdowns to sneaky upset alerts, these early games are already setting the tone for the playoff race. Grab your gear, folks—here’s the must-watch matchups from Week 1 and what you absolutely cannot miss.

---

### North Carolina () vs TCU () — Spread: TCU -6.5
This one’s a heavyweight SMACKDOWN right out the gate. North Carolina and TCU are both ranked teams hungry to start hot. TCU’s physical defense will test North Carolina’s dynamic offense, and a 6.5-point spread screams close game. This rivalry is heating up, and the winner stakes a serious claim in the playoff conversation. Don’t miss this slugfest.

Upset alert: North Carolina could steal this on the road if their QB finds rhythm early.

---

### North Carolina State () vs Virginia () — Spread: Virginia -3.5
ACC neighbors and rivals, NC State and Virginia are poised for a tight battle. Virginia is a slight favorite, but with only a 3.5-point spread, this one’s a toss-up. It’s a defensive slugfest brewing, and who wins here could disrupt the middle of the ACC standings big time.

SmackFootball players: Watch game management and fourth-down decisions. Early season coaching moves could tip this.

---

### New Mexico State vs Florida State () — Spread: FSU -20.0
If Florida State doesn’t handle this convincingly, trouble lurks. Despite the hefty 20-point spread, New Mexico State could pull a minor upset if FSU comes out flat. Florida State’s offense will be under scrutiny to avoid any sluggish start after off-season hype.

Playoff implications: A slow start here could rattle FSU’s rankings early on.

---

### Clemson () vs LSU () — Spread: Clemson -10.5
This SEC-ACC clash is must-watch Week 1 TV. LSU barely edges Clemson on the spread, but the Tigers are no pushovers. High-scoring offenses, aggressive defenses — this game has it all. The winner vaults into early playoff conversations. LSU’s defense versus Clemson’s offensive line battle is the key showdown.

Dangerous matchup: Clemson’s run game vs LSU’s front seven.

---

### Boise State vs Oregon () — Spread: Oregon -30.0
Oregon is a powerhouse and massive favorite, but Boise State’s known for giant-killing acts. Can Boise State slow down Oregon’s lightning-fast offense? Probably not, but don’t count them out completely. For Oregon, this is about sending a statement with a blowout.

---

### Liberty vs James Madison () — Spread: James Madison -9.5
Sun Belt and Colonial competing here with a top-20 ranked JMU favored. Liberty has upset potential but needs to show consistency. This one’s likely a test of how JMU deals with early pressure in their playoff push.

---

### Wisconsin () vs Notre Dame () — Spread: Wisconsin -16.5
Big, bad, and brutal. This clash between two top-15 titans screams a Big Ten vs Independent showdown. Wisconsin’s grind-it-out style vs Notre Dame’s versatile offense. The 16.5 spread has me raising an eyebrow — Notre Dame could cover if they start sharp.

SmackFootball alert: This game could shake up the playoff landscape immediately.

---

### Final Thoughts:
Week 1 isn’t just about warmups — it’s about setting the tone. Watch the rivalry intensity, keep your eye on those dangerous matchups, and be ready for a couple of shocks. Whether you’re betting against the spread or just craving pure football drama, this week delivers.

Stay tuned, and let the 2026 season SMACKDOWN begin!

Here are some rule changes for SmackFootball 2025!

Addition of SUPER SMACK  – Smack level 6 for 30+point win.
People who stop playing for 2 weeks turn purple and do not count towards the HailMary bottom 25% until they return.

Here are some rule changes for SmackFootball 2026!

When making your Pre-Season playoff picks, you will pick 2 of those teams that you think will go to the National Championship. If they make it to the National Championship game, you will get extra points per team.
Also, if you are the only person to pick a team to go to the playoffs, you will get two points instead of one for each level that team advances.

What IS SmackFootball?

SmackFootball is a free College Football 7 game weekly pick’em.
Points are based on your knowledge of college football and a ton of blind luck. Points are also awarded depending on the level of SMACK you put on a game. Smack is like a spread. Sort of. Anyway…..do you feel lucky?

SmackFootball is NOT Fantasy Football.
GOOD GRIEF! We are too lazy and are not interested in spending that much time on ANYTHING. If you want to research and get all strategy, fine. If you want to just log in and make 7 quick picks, fine too. You’ll probably do just as well as the strategists.

SmackFootball is and always will be free to play.
1st place gets a nice engraved crystal football trophy.
The trash talk is PG and good-natured, unless you’re a fan of Tennessee or Miami. You understand, I am sure.

Currently, SmackFootball is only open to people we know and friends of friends.
Register and let me know who you are and I’ll activate your account. Registration just requires a valid email address and a name. YES, you can be Captain Jack Sparrow if you want….keep it PG, hooligan.

HERE WE GO WITH THE SHENANIGANS!!!!

How do I score points?!?!

  • Pick winners for 7 games selected each week.
  • Smack Points – Pick spread points for each game. +- points based on levels of your predicted win or loss
  • Pre-season – Playoffs Picks – Pick 4 teams (12 starting in 2024) that you think will make the college playoffs. + points for each correct team.
  • Pre-season – Coaches Hot Seat – Pick a coach and if your coach gets fired, you win points
  • Pre-season – Heisman – Pick a Heisman candidate. If he wins, you win points
  • Lone Wolf – bonus points if you are the only person to pick a team, coach, playoff team, Heisman candidate, or Heisman winner and they win
  • Hail Mary – bonus points if you are on the bottom and need to start taking some shots downfield
  • “The Unicorn” – (This has its own trophy.) This is a game won where a player chooses The Smack + Lone Wolf + Hail Mary. We think this is worth something like 34 points. It has never happened. Not even close.

Winner take all, baby! Second place is the first loser. :)
Are you ready for some college football?!?!?!
No. You are NOT ready…..
