May 2026 Update:
For more than 20 years, SmackFootball has been built around one thing above all else — the players, rivalries, traditions, and weekly excitement that make this game special. As we prepare for the 2026 season and beyond, we’re excited to begin rolling out the biggest behind-the-scenes upgrades in SmackFootball history. These updates are designed to modernize the site, improve weekly content, simplify season management, and create new features for players and fans — all while keeping the core SmackFootball experience exactly the same.
The heart of SmackFootball is not changing. Weekly picks, hidden selections before lock time, rivalry battles, bowl season chaos, preseason predictions, Hail Mary picks, rankings, and the competitive spirit that has defined this game for decades will all remain intact. The goal is not to reinvent SmackFootball — it’s to strengthen it, modernize it, and prepare it for the future while protecting the traditions that longtime players love.
Over the coming months and seasons, players can expect improvements including enhanced mobile support, smarter weekly updates, AI-powered game previews and upset alerts, better historical tracking, expanded statistics, easier league management, and new community features that celebrate the personalities and history of the game.
SmackFootball began as a passion project among friends. Twenty years later, it has become a tradition. The next chapter is about building a stronger platform around the same game we’ve all come to love every football season.
Well, this is the plan anyway… :)
SmackFootball Week 1 Preview
Week 1 College Football Preview: Rivalry Fireworks, Upset Alerts, and Playoff Drama to Kick Off the 2026 Season
Welcome to Week 1, folks! The 2026 college football season is officially here, and it’s already packed with mouth-watering matchups, potential shakeups, and high-stakes rivalries. If you thought opening weekend was just warm-ups, think again. We’ve got SmackDown showdowns that could set the tone for the entire playoff picture. Grab your snacks, pour the coffee, and let’s dive into the games you NEED to watch closely.
---
### North Carolina vs TCU — Spread: TCU -6.5
This one screams instant classic. North Carolina enters the season as the top dog, but TCU is no pushover. The Horned Frogs have a swagger and a defense that can disrupt. Expect a chess match with both teams looking to stamp themselves as playoff contenders. UNC’s balanced attack will be tested by TCU’s physical front seven. SmackFootball players, watch the QB duel and second-half adjustments. This game could shake up the top 10 and playoff seeding right out of the gate.
---
### North Carolina State vs Virginia — Spread: Virginia -3.5
A classic ACC battle with so much on the line for both programs. NC State’s offense has been quietly lethal, while Virginia’s defense improved last year. The spread is tight, and don’t be surprised if the underdog NC State pulls off a stunner here. Upset alert if Virginia’s offense struggles to find rhythm on the road. This game is a grind-it-out type, perfect for fantasy sleepers and SmackFootball players looking for live-action value.
---
### New Mexico State at Florida State — Spread: FSU -20.0
You know how it goes — powerhouse vs. G5 school. FSU needs a statement win to silence doubters after last season’s drama. Sure, the spread is huge, but New Mexico State’s defense could make things interesting if FSU gets complacent. This is a game to monitor for potential letdowns or injury flags. If you’re a SmackFootball player, watch the first half closely — early turnovers or special teams plays might swing momentum unexpectedly.
---
### Clemson vs LSU — Spread: Clemson -10.5
Now this is the marquee rivalry that will have your heart racing from kickoff. Two SEC and ACC giants collide with major playoff implications. Both teams are loaded with future NFL talent, and this could be a preview of a late-season thriller or even a playoff rematch. Clemson’s high-octane offense versus LSU’s physical, bruising defense makes this the most dangerous matchup of the weekend. SmackFootball players, keep your eyes glued here — game-changing plays will be plenty, and fantasy points aplenty.
---
### Boise State at Oregon — Spread: Oregon -30.0
Oregon is a favorite in the playoff hunt, but can they cover this massive spread? Boise State loves to play spoiler and has a knack for upsets in the past. The Ducks will want to avoid an early-season wake-up call. This one might get ugly, but for the underdogs and fantasy players, watch for Boise State’s QB sparks and special teams fireworks.
---
### Liberty at James Madison — Spread: James Madison -9.5
A battle of rising programs and fierce competitors in a mid-major slugfest. Liberty has talent but James Madison is the favorite at home. This game could get physical and tight, making it a must-watch for SmackFootball players hunting value picks. Expect a hard-nosed, grind-it-out affair with potential breakout stars.
---
### Wisconsin vs Notre Dame — Spread: Wisconsin -16.5
Notre Dame travels to Wisconsin in a battle of two blue-blood programs looking to prove themselves on the national stage. Wisconsin’s ground game has been a machine, but Notre Dame’s defense is aggressive and opportunistic. The spread is hefty, but this could be closer than expected. If you’re a SmackFootball player, focus on linebacker matchups and red-zone efficiency — this one will be a physical slugfest that could impact playoff resumes.
---
### Final Word: Games That Matter
Week 1 isn’t just about warmups and tune-ups — it’s about making a statement. The rivalry games between Clemson-LSU and Wisconsin-Notre Dame are big-time throwdowns with playoff stakes. The North Carolina-TCU showdown might steal the spotlight with its potential for chaos and momentum swings. And keep an eye on those slight underdogs with something to prove — you never know when an upset alert becomes a reality.
For SmackFootball players, these games are goldmines for early-season fantasy points and big plays. Don’t sleep on the underdogs, monitor injury updates, and get ready for fireworks!

Here are some rule changes for SmackFootball 2025!
Addition of SUPER SMACK – Smack level 6 for 30+point win.
People who stop playing for 2 weeks turn purple and do not count towards the HailMary bottom 25% until they return.
Here are some rule changes for SmackFootball 2026!
When making your Pre-Season playoff picks, you will pick 2 of those teams that you think will go to the National Championship. If they make it to the National Championship game, you will get extra points per team.
Also, if you are the only person to pick a team to go to the playoffs, you will get two points instead of one for each level that team advances.
What IS SmackFootball?
SmackFootball is a free College Football 7 game weekly pick’em.
Points are based on your knowledge of college football and a ton of blind luck. Points are also awarded depending on the level of SMACK you put on a game. Smack is like a spread. Sort of. Anyway…..do you feel lucky?
SmackFootball is NOT Fantasy Football.
GOOD GRIEF! We are too lazy and are not interested in spending that much time on ANYTHING. If you want to research and get all strategy, fine. If you want to just log in and make 7 quick picks, fine too. You’ll probably do just as well as the strategists.
SmackFootball is and always will be free to play.
1st place gets a nice engraved crystal football trophy.
The trash talk is PG and good-natured, unless you’re a fan of Tennessee or Miami. You understand, I am sure.
Currently, SmackFootball is only open to people we know and friends of friends.
Register and let me know who you are and I’ll activate your account. Registration just requires a valid email address and a name. YES, you can be Captain Jack Sparrow if you want….keep it PG, hooligan.
HERE WE GO WITH THE SHENANIGANS!!!!
It’s Pre-Season! You got 4 things to do before we get SmackFootball going!

Make your picks!

How do I score points?!?!
- Pick winners for 7 games selected each week.
- Smack Points – Pick spread points for each game. +- points based on levels of your predicted win or loss
- Pre-season – Playoffs Picks – Pick 4 teams (12 starting in 2024) that you think will make the college playoffs. + points for each correct team.
- Pre-season – Coaches Hot Seat – Pick a coach and if your coach gets fired, you win points
- Pre-season – Heisman – Pick a Heisman candidate. If he wins, you win points
- Lone Wolf – bonus points if you are the only person to pick a team, coach, playoff team, Heisman candidate, or Heisman winner and they win
- Hail Mary – bonus points if you are on the bottom and need to start taking some shots downfield
- “The Unicorn” – (This has its own trophy.) This is a game won where a player chooses The Smack + Lone Wolf + Hail Mary. We think this is worth something like 34 points. It has never happened. Not even close.
Winner take all, baby! Second place is the first loser. :)
Are you ready for some college football?!?!?!
No. You are NOT ready…..
