May 2026 Update:

For more than 20 years, SmackFootball has been built around one thing above all else — the players, rivalries, traditions, and weekly excitement that make this game special. As we prepare for the 2026 season and beyond, we’re excited to begin rolling out the biggest behind-the-scenes upgrades in SmackFootball history. These updates are designed to modernize the site, improve weekly content, simplify season management, and create new features for players and fans — all while keeping the core SmackFootball experience exactly the same.

The heart of SmackFootball is not changing. Weekly picks, hidden selections before lock time, rivalry battles, bowl season chaos, preseason predictions, Hail Mary picks, rankings, and the competitive spirit that has defined this game for decades will all remain intact. The goal is not to reinvent SmackFootball — it’s to strengthen it, modernize it, and prepare it for the future while protecting the traditions that longtime players love.

Over the coming months and seasons, players can expect improvements including enhanced mobile support, smarter weekly updates, AI-powered game previews and upset alerts, better historical tracking, expanded statistics, easier league management, and new community features that celebrate the personalities and history of the game.

SmackFootball began as a passion project among friends. Twenty years later, it has become a tradition. The next chapter is about building a stronger platform around the same game we’ve all come to love every football season.

Well, this is the plan anyway… :)

SmackFootball Week 1 Preview

College Football Week 1 Preview: Rivalries, Upset Alerts & Playoff Drama

The 2026 college football season kicks off with a bang, and Week 1 is loaded with blockbuster matchups that have playoff implications, potential upsets, and rivalry fire. SmackFootball players, grab your popcorn—these are the games you can’t afford to miss.

---

### #North Carolina vs #TCU — The SmackDown Showdown
Spread: TCU -6.5

Starting things off with a heavyweight clash, the Tar Heels and Horned Frogs face off in a game that could define the early college football landscape. North Carolina’s high-powered offense will test TCU’s relentless defense. This isn’t just about a season opener — it’s a statement game with playoff seeding ramifications. Expect fireworks and a gritty battle. Will UNC cover, or can TCU prove why they’re favored by nearly a touchdown?

SmackFootball players: Keep your eyes on UNC’s WRs and TCU’s defensive front seven.

---

### #North Carolina State vs #Virginia — The Intrastate Duel
Spread: NCSU -3.5

Close to home and heavy on bragging rights, this ACC showdown is a perfect tune-up clash with a razor-thin spread. Both teams are looking to start strong in what could become a fierce rivalry down the road. Virginia’s defense is underrated, and NC State’s offense is primed to explode. Who will rise under the spotlight?

SmackFootball players: This is your under-the-radar gem. Watch quarterback matchups and key third-down conversions.

---

### #New Mexico State vs #Florida State — The Potential Trap Game
Spread: FSU -20

Florida State opens with a massive favorite spread, but beware the trap game. New Mexico State is primed to shock, and FSU hasn’t always been sharp in season openers. If the Seminoles come out flat, the underdogs could steal the spotlight and send shockwaves nationally.

SmackFootball players: Watch for coaching adjustments and freshman impact players. An upset here would shake playoff predictions.

---

### #Clemson vs #LSU — Clash of the Titans
Spread: Clemson -10.5

This one has “bitter rivalry” written all over it. Two perennial powerhouses collide in a game that could be a preview of playoff battles ahead. LSU’s physicality vs Clemson’s speed could determine who controls the game's tempo. Clemson’s double-digit favorite status means LSU has a chip on its shoulder. Expect no mercy.

SmackFootball players: Defensive lines vs offensive lines—this trench war decides the game.

---

### #Boise State vs #Oregon — The David vs Goliath of the Week
Spread: Oregon -30.0

Oregon is heavily favored here, but Boise State has a history of bending but not breaking. Expect the Broncos to play fearless, which could limit the Ducks early. While Oregon looks like a playoff favorite, slipping up early has ended seasons before. Keep an eye on game flow here—it could be a confidence builder or a warning sign.

SmackFootball players: Watch Boise State’s quarterback under pressure and Oregon’s explosive playmakers.

---

### #Liberty vs #James Madison — The Group of 5 Battle
Spread: Liberty -9.5

The Group of 5 has a spotlight game on their hands. Liberty, favored but facing a hungry JMU squad, should give fans a gritty ACC vs CAA battle. Both teams are looking to break into the national conversation early. This could be a strategic chess match with huge conference stakes.

SmackFootball players: Key running backs and LB corps will be the X-factors here.

---

### #Wisconsin vs #Notre Dame — The Classic Knockdown Dragout
Spread: Wisconsin -16.5

This is the ultimate old-school Big Ten vs independent showdown with playoff implications. Wisconsin’s physical run game and rugged defense will test Notre Dame’s resilience and creativity. The 16.5-point spread tells you the Badgers are expected to dominate, but Notre Dame’s history of pulling rabbits out of the hat makes this a must-watch.

SmackFootball players: Defensive coordinators’ schemes and special teams will be critical.

---

### Final Thoughts

Week 1 of 2026 is not your typical opener. From instant playoff implications to potential upsets and fiery rivalries, the action is rich and the stakes are high. SmackFootball players, load up your lineups wisely—these games won’t just set the tone, they could reshape the entire season.

Stay tuned, stay loud, and let the SmackDown begin!

Congratulations, Donna!

Here are some rule changes for SmackFootball 2025!

Addition of SUPER SMACK  – Smack level 6 for 30+point win.
People who stop playing for 2 weeks turn purple and do not count towards the HailMary bottom 25% until they return.

Here are some rule changes for SmackFootball 2026!

When making your Pre-Season playoff picks, you will pick 2 of those teams that you think will go to the National Championship. If they make it to the National Championship game, you will get extra points per team.
Also, if you are the only person to pick a team to go to the playoffs, you will get two points instead of one for each level that team advances.

What IS SmackFootball?

SmackFootball is a free College Football 7 game weekly pick’em.
Points are based on your knowledge of college football and a ton of blind luck. Points are also awarded depending on the level of SMACK you put on a game. Smack is like a spread. Sort of. Anyway…..do you feel lucky?

SmackFootball is NOT Fantasy Football.
GOOD GRIEF! We are too lazy and are not interested in spending that much time on ANYTHING. If you want to research and get all strategy, fine. If you want to just log in and make 7 quick picks, fine too. You’ll probably do just as well as the strategists.

SmackFootball is and always will be free to play.
1st place gets a nice engraved crystal football trophy.
The trash talk is PG and good-natured, unless you’re a fan of Tennessee or Miami. You understand, I am sure.

Currently, SmackFootball is only open to people we know and friends of friends.
Register and let me know who you are and I’ll activate your account. Registration just requires a valid email address and a name. YES, you can be Captain Jack Sparrow if you want….keep it PG, hooligan.

HERE WE GO WITH THE SHENANIGANS!!!!

How do I score points?!?!

  • Pick winners for 7 games selected each week.
  • Smack Points – Pick spread points for each game. +- points based on levels of your predicted win or loss
  • Pre-season – Playoffs Picks – Pick 4 teams (12 starting in 2024) that you think will make the college playoffs. + points for each correct team.
  • Pre-season – Coaches Hot Seat – Pick a coach and if your coach gets fired, you win points
  • Pre-season – Heisman – Pick a Heisman candidate. If he wins, you win points
  • Lone Wolf – bonus points if you are the only person to pick a team, coach, playoff team, Heisman candidate, or Heisman winner and they win
  • Hail Mary – bonus points if you are on the bottom and need to start taking some shots downfield
  • “The Unicorn” – (This has its own trophy.) This is a game won where a player chooses The Smack + Lone Wolf + Hail Mary. We think this is worth something like 34 points. It has never happened. Not even close.

Winner take all, baby! Second place is the first loser. :)
Are you ready for some college football?!?!?!
No. You are NOT ready…..
