May 2026 Update:
For more than 20 years, SmackFootball has been built around one thing above all else — the players, rivalries, traditions, and weekly excitement that make this game special. As we prepare for the 2026 season and beyond, we’re excited to begin rolling out the biggest behind-the-scenes upgrades in SmackFootball history. These updates are designed to modernize the site, improve weekly content, simplify season management, and create new features for players and fans — all while keeping the core SmackFootball experience exactly the same.
The heart of SmackFootball is not changing. Weekly picks, hidden selections before lock time, rivalry battles, bowl season chaos, preseason predictions, Hail Mary picks, rankings, and the competitive spirit that has defined this game for decades will all remain intact. The goal is not to reinvent SmackFootball — it’s to strengthen it, modernize it, and prepare it for the future while protecting the traditions that longtime players love.
Over the coming months and seasons, players can expect improvements including enhanced mobile support, smarter weekly updates, AI-powered game previews and upset alerts, better historical tracking, expanded statistics, easier league management, and new community features that celebrate the personalities and history of the game.
SmackFootball began as a passion project among friends. Twenty years later, it has become a tradition. The next chapter is about building a stronger platform around the same game we’ve all come to love every football season.
Well, this is the plan anyway… :)
SmackFootball Week 1 Preview
Week 1 of the 2026 college football season is here, and it promises fireworks from kickoff to the final whistle. Rivalries will reignite, playoff hopes begin to take shape, and a few underdogs smell blood in the water. Let’s dive into the biggest storylines, most dangerous matchups, and the must-watch games for SmackFootball fans.
---
### North Carolina vs. TCU (-6.5)
This isn’t just any opener — it’s a clash between two top-10 squads with playoff aspirations. North Carolina’s dynamic offense is tested by TCU’s smothering defense in what could be an instant classic. Look for a chess match between two innovative coordinators. Will the Tar Heels jump out to an early lead, or will Matt Campbell’s Horned Frogs steal a road win? This game screams upset alert and playoff resume builder. SmackFootball players, lock this one in — it’ll set the tone for the season.
---
### North Carolina State vs. Virginia (-3.5)
This in-state rivalry has heated up, and the Wolfpack want to prove last season’s shocker was no fluke. Virginia’s physical defense and clock-chewing offense will go head-to-head with NC State’s explosiveness. The spread is tight, signaling a potential nail-biter. Expect big hits and momentum swings. This one’s a must-watch for anyone tracking ACC chaos and early conference pecking order.
---
### New Mexico State vs. Florida State (-20.0)
A massive line here, and for good reason — Florida State enters with championship dreams, while New Mexico State looks to make a statement. But never say never in college football. If the Aggies find a spark early, they could rattle the Seminoles and send shockwaves through Week 1. It’s a classic mismatch on paper, but keep an eye on FSU’s health and turnovers. SmackFootball players with a taste for giant-killers should watch closely.
---
### Clemson vs. LSU (-10.5)
When two blueblood programs with rich traditions collide, you know it’s going to be electric. Clemson’s disciplined approach meets LSU’s physicality in a game with playoff implications written all over it. The Tigers’ defense has questions, while Clemson’s offense looks dialed in. Can LSU’s signal-caller rise to the occasion? This one’s a heavyweight bout that could define the SEC vs ACC bragging rights early. GameDay vibes galore.
---
### Boise State vs. Oregon (-30.0)
Oregon is favored by three touchdowns, but Boise State always plays spoiler on a national stage. The Ducks boast a high-powered offense that should overwhelm the Broncos, but don’t count Boise out. They’ve got grit, and the smurf turf is a fortress. For SmackFootball players, this is a great game to test your ability to spot potential upsets and DFS sleeper picks. Can Boise keep it close and steal some points for the cash?
---
### Liberty vs. James Madison (-9.5)
Sun Belt newcomer Liberty is favored but faces a hungry JMU squad looking to prove they belong at this level. This matchup has all the makings of a gritty, physical contest. Liberty’s speed meets JMU’s tenacity in a battle that could foreshadow future conference showdowns. Underdog lovers, keep this game on your radar.
---
### Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame (-16.5)
Notre Dame gets a sizable spread at home, but Wisconsin’s old-school power football style could give the Irish fits. The Badgers excel in controlling the line of scrimmage and shortening games, which could frustrate Notre Dame’s explosive offense. This one’s a test of Notre Dame’s ability to shake off rust and establish dominance early. SmackFootball players need to watch this closely for Big Ten vs Independent bragging rights and early rankings impact.
---
### Final Take
Week 1 brings a mix of marquee rivalries, potential upsets, and games with heavyweight playoff ramifications. The #North Carolina vs #TCU showdown tops the list for intrigue and stakes, but don’t sleep on Clemson vs LSU or Wisconsin vs Notre Dame for classic power clashes.
For SmackFootball players, your best bets are locking in early on games with tight spreads and embracing the chaos of those blowouts. This week sets the tone — who will come out sharp, and who will get caught looking ahead?
Buckle up. 2026 is officially underway.

Here are some rule changes for SmackFootball 2025!
Addition of SUPER SMACK – Smack level 6 for 30+point win.
People who stop playing for 2 weeks turn purple and do not count towards the HailMary bottom 25% until they return.
Here are some rule changes for SmackFootball 2026!
When making your Pre-Season playoff picks, you will pick 2 of those teams that you think will go to the National Championship. If they make it to the National Championship game, you will get extra points per team.
Also, if you are the only person to pick a team to go to the playoffs, you will get two points instead of one for each level that team advances.
What IS SmackFootball?
SmackFootball is a free College Football 7 game weekly pick’em.
Points are based on your knowledge of college football and a ton of blind luck. Points are also awarded depending on the level of SMACK you put on a game. Smack is like a spread. Sort of. Anyway…..do you feel lucky?
SmackFootball is NOT Fantasy Football.
GOOD GRIEF! We are too lazy and are not interested in spending that much time on ANYTHING. If you want to research and get all strategy, fine. If you want to just log in and make 7 quick picks, fine too. You’ll probably do just as well as the strategists.
SmackFootball is and always will be free to play.
1st place gets a nice engraved crystal football trophy.
The trash talk is PG and good-natured, unless you’re a fan of Tennessee or Miami. You understand, I am sure.
Currently, SmackFootball is only open to people we know and friends of friends.
Register and let me know who you are and I’ll activate your account. Registration just requires a valid email address and a name. YES, you can be Captain Jack Sparrow if you want….keep it PG, hooligan.
HERE WE GO WITH THE SHENANIGANS!!!!

Make your picks!

How do I score points?!?!
- Pick winners for 7 games selected each week.
- Smack Points – Pick spread points for each game. +- points based on levels of your predicted win or loss
- Pre-season – Playoffs Picks – Pick 4 teams (12 starting in 2024) that you think will make the college playoffs. + points for each correct team.
- Pre-season – Coaches Hot Seat – Pick a coach and if your coach gets fired, you win points
- Pre-season – Heisman – Pick a Heisman candidate. If he wins, you win points
- Lone Wolf – bonus points if you are the only person to pick a team, coach, playoff team, Heisman candidate, or Heisman winner and they win
- Hail Mary – bonus points if you are on the bottom and need to start taking some shots downfield
- “The Unicorn” – (This has its own trophy.) This is a game won where a player chooses The Smack + Lone Wolf + Hail Mary. We think this is worth something like 34 points. It has never happened. Not even close.
Winner take all, baby! Second place is the first loser. :)
Are you ready for some college football?!?!?!
No. You are NOT ready…..
